Putrajaya, 28 October 2024- Eight local councils in Sarawak have achieved "Sustainable" status under the Malaysian Urban-Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development (MURNInets), an assessment system by the Department of Town and Country Planning (PLANMalaysia) under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. MURNInets evaluates the sustainability of local authorities’ areas based on six key dimensions: Competitive Economy, Sustainable Environmental Quality, Prosperous Community, Optimal Land Use and Natural Resources, Efficient Infrastructure and Transportation, and Effective Governance.
Of these eight councils, Padawan Municipal Council attained "Most Sustainable" Award during the 2024 National World Town Planning Day celebration at the Everly Hotel Putra Jaya today.
During the celebration, several other awards were given to the councils. The Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) received the Sustainable Develepment Goals (SDG) Recognition for its effort in advancing initiatives aligned with global SDGs. Meanwhile, Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan and Majlis Perbandaran Padawan achieved the Smart City Early Adopter Award, each receiving RM400,000 in funding to support their commitment and early success in delivering smart, citizen-centric services.
The Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak (MPHLG) was also recognised with the Pusat Operasi MURNINets Negeri (POMN) award for its role in coordinating and driving sustainability transformation across Sarawak.
