KUCHING (July 30): The Sarawak government will continue to emphasise the reduction of single-use plastic through local authorities, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said the government is also actively promoting the use of eco-friendly materials, such as using reusable bags in supermarkets, and environmentally-friendly packaging in food premises.

“I understand that Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has implemented various initiatives including recycling programmes, environmental sustainability efforts, health education, and a mass vaccination programme to make Padawan a cleaner, healthier, and safer place,” he said in a speech for the closing ceremony of MPP’s month-long cleanliness campaign at Batu Kawa Riverbank Park here today.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government II (Public Health and Housing) Datuk Michael Tiang delivered the speech.

Dr Sim also stressed the importance of reducing river pollution through regular monitoring and cleaning programmes, enhancing solid waste management, encouraging conservation and rehabilitation efforts through reforestation and developing sustainable cities, as well as promoting renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar, and wind.

He called on both younger and older generations to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives to promote a greener city.
