KUCHING: The festive Aidilfitri lights illuminating the iconic cat statue in Padungan not only brighten the city but also symbolise the warmth of unity and harmony among Sarawak’s multi-racial community.

The lively ‘Switching On Aidilfitri Lighting’ event gathered people from various backgrounds, reflecting the spirit of togetherness as the main strength of this state.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said the initiative to decorate the cat statue with a festive theme has become a significant tradition that not only attracts tourists, but also instils a sense of pride among the local community.

According to him, the continued efforts by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in maintaining the tradition reflect the unity and harmony of Sarawak’s diverse society.

“This tradition has been ongoing for a long time and has been well sustained. It symbolises mutual respect and forms the foundation for building a stable and peaceful state,” he said when met by reporters here on Tuesday.

He also stressed that in a world facing various conflicts, Sarawak continues to choose the path of unity by respecting diversity and maintaining social stability.

Meanwhile, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said this year’s decorations feature the cat statue dressed in traditional Malay attire as a symbol of an inclusive Aidilfitri celebration, reflecting the identity of Sarawak’s plural society.

According to him, organising such an event not only livens up the city but also serves as a reminder that peace and stability must be preserved.

“Without stability, we cannot enjoy the harmony and prosperity that we have today,” he said.

MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili said the event successfully brought together people of various races in a lively and harmonious atmosphere.

“Celebrations like this not only strengthen ties among communities but also reinforce the spirit of unity among the people,” he added. -UKASnews
