BALINGIAN (Oct 3): Sarawak is developing a new affordable housing model targeting the M40 group, with pilot projects planned before the scheme is potentially expanded to other urban areas.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government was currently working on suitable house designs and cost structures to determine an affordable price range for M40 households.
He said the initiative was necessary as land availability and prices had become increasingly challenging, particularly in urban areas.
“We are now starting the calculation of the type of house and the cost, within a range that the M40 can afford,” he told a press conference after the handover ceremony for Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) under the Skim Pembesaran Kampung (SPK) Balingian today.
Abang Johari said the pilot projects were expected to be implemented at two locations, including one in Kuching and another near Samarahan.
The state government would assess the outcome of the pilot projects before considering expanding the model to other urban areas such as Kuching, Miri and Sibu, he said.
He said the initiative would involve collaboration among state agencies, including the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and other relevant agencies.
Abang Johari said the state government was also exploring new approaches to housing development as suitable land became increasingly limited and land prices remained a key consideration in providing affordable homes in urban areas.
